Values Define Who We Are

Values Define Who We Are

One of the things I like most about church is that it teaches us values. How we act defines the type of value we have and shapes our personality. We are here to be like Christ, which often seems like a difficult task because he is perfect and we are not, but we can get closer to him by living his commandments and following his guidance.

Of all values, my favorites are honesty and virtue. Being honest means keeping your word, doing what is right in the moment, always telling the truth, and acting with sincere intent. I see many examples of honesty in the scriptures, but the greatest examples for me will always be my parents. I remember when I was a kid, I found a toy I really wanted, but I could not afford it. I was so happy about it, but when I showed it to my parents, they asked me where I had found it and whether it belonged to me. I did not know, but they helped me find the owner and return it. I was sad, but I learned a valuable lesson: if I kept the toy, even though I knew it was not mine, I was dishonest. Since that moment, I have tried to be honest and virtuous in everything I do, because my Savior and Heavenly Father are always watching.
